Today is Texas' pro day, and there are several Longhorns that could be interesting for the Steelers. Apparently, their quarterback is on the team's radar.
According to John Hendrix of Athlon Sports, members of the Steelers' staff met with quarterback Quinn Ewers ahead of the Texas pro day in Austin. It's unclear who met with Ewers, but Mike Tomlin was part of the meeting with him at the NFL Combine in Indianapolis. So, there's plenty of evidence to suggest the Steelers have interest.
Ewers is an intriguing but risky prospect. At 6-2 and 214 pounds, he's not the biggest signal caller, and he lacks escapability to consistently make plays outside the pocket. His arm talent is very enticing, possessing the ability to make a number of throws from a variety of arm angles. He also has a very sudden release with minimal effort. However, he is very lacking in making full-field reads and often predetermines his throws instead of working through his progressions and attack what the defense gives him. For him to develop into an NFL starter, he has to figure that stuff out because he doesn't have the athleticism to consistently play outside the pocket.
Ewers isn't the only Texas player the Steelers could draft. There are a number of very interesting players working out in Austin today, highlighted by wide receiver Matthew Golden, cornerback Jahdae Barron, defensive tackle Alfred Collins and wide receiver Isaiah Bond.
