The Steelers have entered a partnership with Borussia Dortmund (BVB), a soccer club that plays in Bundesliga, the top league in Germany. The purpose of the partnership is to further both clubs' efforts in each other's markets through joint team activities, content and fan engagement initiatives.
BVB, who also sports black and gold, is the second-most decorated football club in Germany. They have won eight league championships, five domestic tournaments (DFB-Pokal) and six DFL-Supercups, which is a one-off match between the winner of the Bundesliga championship and DFB-Pokal. Internationally, BVB won the UEFA Champions League in 1997, the most prestigious club tournament in Europe. BVB made the Champions League final last year, but lost to Spain's Real Madrid, 2-0.
In 2024, the Steelers received a license for Germany from the NFL as part of the league's global markets program. No doubt, this partnership is a product of that endeavor.
"The partnership with Borussia Dortmund, the first-of-its-kind for the Steelers organization, builds off the deep connections both of our teams have with the communities we represent, as well as our shared values, rooted in our industrial pasts, of hard work, determination and a winning spirit," said Dan Rooney, director of business development and strategy, in a press release. "We look forward to what's next as we support each other's success in reaching fans in new markets and raising the profiles of the cities we call home."
The two teams have already started doing things together. Dortmund hosted a Steelers staff member at a recent business summit in Germany. Later this spring, Pittsburgh will host a BVB staff member to reciprocate. In mid-April, the Steelers will host its first-ever German-based flag football clinic at the BVB football academy.
In addition, BVB hosted Miles Killebrew for a home match at Signal Iduna Park in Dortmund, Germany, which features the world-famous 'Yellow Wall', the largest standing terrace in European football. In December 2024, the Steelers welcomed BVB for home game at Acrisure Stadium. The visit included content collaborations and a jersey swap between former BVB fullback Patrick Owomoyela, a long-time Steelers fan, and Santonio Holmes.

"I was blown away by my experience at Dortmund," Killebrew said, via the Steelers' website. "From the minute we arrived at Signal Iduna Park, it was clear to me how special an organization BVB is. From the 'Yellow Wall', to the atmosphere and the fans, it was a memorable day for me, and I look forward to returning someday. It will be exciting to see the relationship between the Steelers and BVB grow in the future."
