The Steelers' proposal regarding contact with free agents during the negotiation window has passed. It came with some modifications and on a one-year trial basis.
Teams now can have one video or phone call with no more than five prospective unrestricted free agents, and can book travel upon agreeing to terms.
There's no telling how the Steelers may benefit from future performances in free agency, but this resolution passing gives them a better process for getting to know a potential new player.
"Well, it's hard to predict how well we'll do in free agency," Art Rooney II said following the conclusion of today's meetings. "I do think it's an improvement in terms of really being able to talk to the player himself rather than just his agent in that negotiating window. So, we think it's an improvement."
Previously, teams could only be in contact with a player's agent during the negotiation window, otherwise known as the "legal tampering" period. Teams were also not permitted to book travel prior to the start of the new league year, when contracts can become official.
