Mike Tomlin is set to talk with local reporters at 4 p.m. Once it's over, I'll have quick updates right here.
Tomlin is about to sit down with us. Updates to come …
• Tomlin was noncommittal on any kind of deadline for Aaron Rodgers to sign: "Not to my knowledge. I don't know that we've approached it from a deadline perspective. Certainly, you'd like to have settled circumstances, but deadlines don't often bring that to a head."
• Tomlin on his meeting with Rodgers: "It was a really good day. Specifically, he and I, obviously, have known of each other for some time. And so, it was really good to spend some time together, man, and get to know each other more intimately. But, it is free agency. It is a process. I have nothing of any more significance to add other than that."
• Tomlin on whether or not he asked Rodgers about his timeline to make a decision: "I didn't (ask him). I really wanted to spend more of our time getting to know him better. Things that he values as a player and a man, what he might be looking for with his next stop."
• Tomlin on how long the process of finding a quarterback has taken: "I've learned over the years not to be light on my feet from an anticipation perspective. So, I don't know that I'm shocked by anything."
• Tomlin on when he'd like to have another quarterback signed: "We're weeks or so out away from the draft. Certainly, we'd all like to have settled circumstances, but it is a process. The acquisition of talent, whether it's at the quarterback position or all positions, we spend a great bulk of our spring and offseason putting together a 90-man roster. And so, it is ongoing."
• Tomlin said the team is doing their due diligence on other potential options at quarterback, including the draft: "We're communicating with some free agents, preparing for the draft. Omar [Khan] and I just got off on a nice tour here in the last week where we were at Notre Dame, Ohio State and Texas, for example. ... It's been a good process for us."
• Tomlin on them not re-signing Russell Wilson or Justin Fields after wanting to keep at least one of them: "I know what we said regarding Russell and Justin, but it didn't pan out that way. Such is life in our game, particularly in free agency."
• Tomlin said they're optimistic about the quarterback room, particularly right now because of bringing Mason Rudolph back: "We're excited about about having Mason Rudolph back. Our knowledge of him, not only as a player but as a man, it's exciting to have him back. I know he's excited to be back."
• Tomlin on whether or not Rodgers is signed affects the team's draft plans: "Our draft plans are our draft plans. We're right now just information gathering, getting to know the whole field. I'd imagine that focus and those details will narrow as we get close, but we're a pretty decent distance from some of that narrowing."
• Tomlin on if the pursuit of Rodgers have hindered the Steelers' free agency plans: "I don't feel like our free agency plans have been hindered by anything, to be quite honest with you. Particularly the pursuit of one individual, no."
• Tomlin on how DK Metcalf fits in the offense: "Very well. DK is an awesome talent, one that we're familiar with. We've seen him some. Equally, man, he's an awesome guy and I've enjoyed getting to know him, his relationship with the game, his approach to work. He's going to be a big-time asset to us, not only in terms of the tangible things that he brings, but there's an awesome intangible quality to him as a worker and as a man that's equally as exciting."
• Tomlin on what he would like to get from the quarterback position that he didn't get last year: "I hadn't thought about all of that, particularly as it pertains to relative to last year. I'm not in that business. It's our goal and job to build as strong a team as we can for 2025, knowing that the challenges are going to be unique to 2025. We're working in that spirit. Certainly, you'd like to learn from your past experience, the history of it. But very rarely do we make decisions in reaction to or response to, because the challenges are always moving."
• Tomlin on the acquisition of Darius Slay: "He's a guy that we've competed against a lot over the years. Man, I've just got so much respect for his talents, his resume, his approach to business, his football intellect. He's a good veteran player. We've done similar business in recent years -- Joe Haden, (Patrick Peterson). We're excited about getting a guy with some real know-how and experience to help us in our collective efforts."
• Tomlin on a Plan B in case they don't land Rodgers: "Again, I don't know if we're identifying anything as Plan A, Plan B or Plan C. We're just simply looking at the field of available people, whether it's free agency or the draft, making decisions and gathering information accordingly."
• Tomlin on whether or not they still have to add a veteran quarterback, whether it's Rodgers or not: "I don't know that we necessarily feel that way. Again, we're just looking at all the people that are available to us."
• Tomlin on the strength of the field they have to evaluate at quarterback, whether it be free agency or the draft: "Again, I'm not evaluating anybody that's not on our team. It doesn't benefit us or them, for that matter."
• Tomlin on if Rudolph could be the starting quarterback: "I think that's why we acquired him, man. We like Mason Rudolph, but that's no secret."
• Tomlin on the running back position, both in terms of the draft and their current room: "Uniquely deep draft at that position. I've got an opportunity to meet a lot of them and see some of them, whether it's working in Indy or at the pro day. There's a lot of talent in that group. Just really exciting there. Obviously, the acquisition of Kenny Gainwell is something that we're really excited about. That's a guy that we've competed against. Man, it seems like he made a bunch of significant plays in a flat against us a couple of months back that were significant, game-altering-like plays. You know, you catch a swing route on third-and-6, you make a couple of people miss, you get a new set of downs, you're able to keep the drive alive. He converted a third down in a similar way inside the red area, created a first-and-goal circumstance. It directly related to points as that game unfolded. You guys know that watch us work routinely how much we value routine things like winning in the flat, whether you're a ball carrier or a ball catcher or a tackler. So, that's a skill set that really stood out to us. But he's got a well-rounded game. He's a capable and willing special teams player, plays a lot on possession-down ball. I'm excited about the acquisition of Kenny Gainwell."
• Tomlin on any concerns about Metcalf and George Pickens being too similar: "I don't necessarily view them as similar, to be quite honest with you. They're both downfield capable, but they're different people. I mean, DK is a big man. GP is tall. (Laughs) I mean, there's a difference."
