Justin Fields opted to test the market and signed a two-year, $40-million contract with the Jets.
That's a richer contract than what the Steelers offered. But, in an interview with the Jets' website, Fields listed other reasons for why he chose to leave for New York.
"I think, No. 1, Coach (Aaron) Glenn," Fields said. "I've played against him early in my career. I know how passionate he is about the game, the way he coaches, the way his players play. So I think that was the biggest thing for me. And just the opportunity, the fans, of course, the city. When you win here, there's no better place to win. All of those characteristics, all of those reasons are ultimately the reason I ended up here."
Coming off the best performance of his career, Fields said he feels like he has "untapped potential," which is why the Steelers pursued a reunion. However, they weren't willing to go beyond a certain threshold in terms of the contract. The Jets were, which is a big reason why Fields is trading black and gold for green and white.
