The Steelers' pre-draft visitors for today are Florida State defensive tackle Joshua Farmer and Virginia Tech running back Bhayshul Tuten. Neither visit is a surprise as both names were previously reported as scheduled. They also align with two strengths of the draft class and two areas of need for the team.
Farmer is most likely a later Day 2 pick, a potential option for the Steelers in the third round. He has great size at 6-3, 305 pounds, and best fits as a defensive end in a 3-4 scheme. However, his size and strength makes him an eventual option as an eventual two-gap defender. His strength really stands out, and he often plays with great pad level, giving him leverage on top of great strength. Also, Farmer's got 35-inch arms, which is superb length for an interior defender.
Farmer needs to improve his technique playing more as a three-technique (between the guard and tackle), especially when considering the Steelers' demands for interior defensive linemen when in their subpackages. He tends to gets walled off by blockers too often in run defense, which would need to improve. His first few steps off the ball are good, but he could benefit from adding more tricks to the bag in his pass-rush game.
Tuten would be an immediately great fit in Arthur Smith's offense. He's a prototypical slasher, possessing great speed (4.32 40-yard dash) and exceptional one-cut ability to run in wide zone and outside zone schemes. Tuten is only 5-9, but he's compact at 206 pounds and really is an explosive athlete.
For teams that really trust their coaching, Tuten could become a steal in this draft. All of the tools are there for him to become a dangerous runner at the NFL level. Two areas that need drastic improvement are his pass protection and ball security. Pass protection isn't quite as bad as nine fumbles over the past two seasons. Somebody like Mike Tomlin won't deal with putting the ball on the ground anywhere near that often. But, if those two areas can be coached up, again, we're talking about a potential steal. He's likely a late Day 2 or early Day 3 pick.
