The Steelers hosted four more prospects for pre-draft visits today, including a potential first round quarterback.
The four visitors are Ole Miss quarterback Jaxson Dart, Oregon defensive tackle Jamaree Caldwell, Iowa State wide receiver Jaylin Noel and South Carolina safety Nick Emmanwori. The Steelers have used at least 19 of the 30 permitted pre-draft visits.
Dart highlights the group because he's one of the top quarterbacks in this year's draft. It is a pretty underwhelming class, but Dart still has enough traits to make him a potential first-round pick. It remains unclear how serious the Steelers are about potentially selecting Dart 21st overall, but they'll get a better idea by hosting him for a pre-draft visit.
Dart is a very good athlete who can pick up yards when he needs to on the ground, including an ability to move the chains when necessary. While Dart's arm is most likely considered average by NFL standards, he has the ability to throw from multiple arm angles and can sometimes make outstanding throws on the run. However, due to an unproven ability to make consistent throws or maintain sound mechanics under pressure, as well as slow processing after the first read, there's legitimate concern about his ceiling at the NFL level.
Caldwell is most likely a later Day 2 or early Day 3 pick in this year's draft, but that's only because the defensive tackle position is so deep. At 6-2 and 332 pounds, Caldwell is more of a nose tackle, but is athletic enough to play the three-technique in the Steelers' front when in sub-packages. He's more of a run stopper than a pass rusher, and he needs to be coached up on some technique. But those are perhaps the two things holding him back the most. If he's available in the third or fourth round, he could be a very nice find.
Noel is a twitchy receiver better served in the slot, but has great speed and start-stop ability to be able to line up outside on occasion. He's also a prime candidate in the return game. At 5-10, he's on the smaller side. He also needs some refinement as a route runner and drops can be an issue, as well. However, a lot of this stuff is correctable with coaching. The uncoachable traits are very enticing, which is most likely why he'll end up being a Day 2 pick. He could be available in the third round.
Emmanwori is perhaps the best athlete in the entire draft class, with his Relative Athletic Score being a perfect 10.00. He ran a 4.38 40-yard dash with a 1.53 10-yard split and 2.57 20-yard split, all elite times. At the NFL Combine, he recorded a ridiculous 43-inch vertical and broad jump of 11 feet and six inches. He's also of great size at 6-3 and 220 pounds, and recorded 20 reps in the bench press, the most among safeties and second among all defensive backs at the Combine. Even though safety isn't a gigantic need, Emmanwori's athleticism alone is worth the pre-draft visit.
