Since an active first week of free agency, the Steelers have made several minor additions to help round out the roster. Now with the contract details of those moves known, we have a very clear picture of how much salary cap space the team has with less than three weeks until the draft.
According to OverTheCap.com, the Steelers have $32.12 million in cap space, with all known signings figuring into the team's top-51 contracts. This includes Mason Rudolph carrying a $3-million cap hit in the first of a two-year contract, and Ben Skowronek with a $1.71-million cap hit in the first year of a two-year, $4.475-million contract.
Also included, all on one-year deals: A $3-million cap hit for Juan Thornhill, a $2.8-million cap hit for Daniel Ekuale, a $1.198-million cap hit for Scotty Miller, a $1.08-million cap hit for James Pierre and a $1.03-million cap hit for both Esezi Otomewo and Jeremiah Moon.
Figuring into that $32.12 million of cap space should also be around $10-12 million for the cost of the upcoming draft class and wiggle room for throughout the season, in which every dollar is counted toward the cap. It also might give you an indication that the current contract offer for Aaron Rodgers isn't a bank-breaking deal, even if it truly is just for one year.
Even if the Steelers need to create cap space to accommodate a Rodgers signing, it's very easy to do. Perhaps the easiest route is signing T.J. Watt to a contract extension. Giving him a new contract could help lower his $30.4-million cap hit this season, and spread any money saved throughout the life of the extension.
Either way, the Steelers still have plenty of flexibility after shoring up several holes on the roster. They're certainly not done, with the draft being the next facet to improve the roster.
