Art Rooney II just finished addressing reporters here at the annual meeting ...
• Regarding the pursuit of Aaron Rodgers: "Nothing new on the Aaron Rodgers front. We'll see what happens. Hopefully we'll know something soon."
• If Rooney is content to wait for Rodgers: "Well, not forever. But, a little while longer."
• If Rooney envisioned the negotiation with Rodgers taking this long: "No, I didn't envision it taking this long."
• On the meeting with Rodgers on the South Side: "It was good to meet him. We talked about Pittsburgh and all the Pittsburgh coaches he's had over the years. We talked about Greenfield and how much he knows about Greenfield. We had a good conversation."
• On how Rodgers knows so much about Greenfield: "Yeah, [Mike] McCarthy always talked about Greenfield, I guess."
• On Rodgers throwing with DK Metcalf: "I would say it's a good sign that he wanted to do that. We keep hearing that he's, I guess, heading in our direction. Seems to be all signs are positive so far."
• On if he has a good feeling Rodgers will sign with the Steelers: "We keep getting positive, sort of, signals about it. I'd say we feel pretty good about it at this point."
• Regarding the proposal to ban the tush push being tabled: "A lot of discussion about it. I think there's more to come on it. Just no approval on it today. ... I think it was a combination of things. It also got into a discussion about there are other similar kinds of plays where we have these scrums downfield where guys are pushing the pile. Why aren't we addressing that when we're addressing this? It got into a number of different things that came up. I guess it seems like it was better off tabling it, coming back and talking about it more later."
• On if more data is required before voting to ban the tush push: "I think some people want to see more data, too. Yeah."
• Rooney said the Steelers were in favor of banning the tush push: "We were in favor of the rule as proposed. It's a fairly narrow proposal in terms of eliminating the ability to push the quarterback on a quarterback sneak. We were in favor of that."
• Rooney said the team is in favor of the overtime rule being changed to allow both teams to possess the ball. Regarding the change to the kickoff: "It's okay. I'm not 100% sure I'm in love with this rule, but we'll see how it goes for another year."
The kickoff rule is permanent, but can be amended.
• On replay assist being expanded to help pick up flags on missed penalty calls: "We didn't exactly expand replay. It's replay assist, as they call it, which is a little different than a full review. As long as it doesn't keep slowing the game down too much, we were in favor of it."
• Clarifying the rule: "You can pick up a flag, but you cannot put a flag on the field."
• On the Steelers' proposal passing for talking directly to players in the negotiation window: "Well, it's hard to predict how well we'll do in free agency. I do think it's an improvement in terms of really being able to talk to the player himself rather than just his agent in that negotiating window. So, we think it's an improvement."
• On the playoff seeding changes not passing: "We were against the playoff seeding. We think that division rivalries are one of the more important parts of the competition, and [we] just don't want to do anything to upset that."
• On playing a game in Ireland: "We're excited to be going to Ireland, and we told the league that we need more tickets. The demand, so far, has been great, and we're looking forward to it."
• On the overall feeling about upgrading the team in free agency: "I think overall, it has gone well. We've picked up some players that I think can help us, so the door is still open, and we'll see what happens. But I guess from here on, the main focus will be getting ready for the draft."
