After two meetings, Wilson's still unsigned, so ... ?
Russell Wilson left in-person meetings with the Browns and Giants without signing a contract with either team. As the wait for Aaron Rodgers drags out, I begin to wonder if things will change inside the Steelers organization.
To uphold what Dejan Kovacevic and I have reported for weeks: There are many in the organization who don't want Wilson back. That's why he's still not re-signed, despite him making a very public cry for a return. If Wilson truly was Plan B, he would have been re-signed minutes after Justin Fields agreed to terms with the Jets. That didn't happen, and the Steelers have pivoted to Rodgers and reunited with Mason Rudolph.
And, when it became known Wilson was visiting with the Browns and Giants, nothing changed on the Steelers' front. No movement, no change in an offer -- nothing. Their actions speak for themselves. That's not the way a team signals a desire for a reunion.
All of that being said, if Rodgers signs elsewhere, will the Steelers turn back to Wilson and try to work something out? Will they call the Falcons and ask what it would take to pry Kirk Cousins away? The Falcons kept Cousins on their roster long enough to give him the $10-million roster bonus he was due by March 15. I'm skeptical about their intentions with Cousins, despite committing to Michael Penix Jr. as their starting quarterback.
I'm not saying the Steelers and Wilson are heading for a reunion. Nothing I've heard to this point suggests that's going to happen. But I'm curious if circumstances will change opinions.
