George showcases athleticism for scouts at pro day
Nate Matlack said he spent time working out with Brandon George ahead of today’s pro day at the UPMC Rooney Sports Complex in the South Side. George seemed to open some eyes with his performances at the various testing stations, and Matlack isn't the least bit surprised.
“I saw it the last three months. I knew exactly what was going to happen,” said Matlack, who also took part in drills with representatives from all 32 NFL teams in attendance. “I don’t think he even did as good as he thought he would have, so that tells you something. I knew he was going to perform well and have one of the best days out here.”
A sixth-year linebacker who served as a team captain, George stood out all season long in totaling 80 tackles, 5.5 tackles for loss, two sacks, three forced fumbles, one interception and one fumble recovery in 13 games. On this day, he once again stood out in more ways than one.
George began his day by completing 28 reps at 225 pounds in the bench press and impressed in the vertical jump with a leap of 42 1/2 inches. Had he participated in the NFL Combine, George's numbers would have ranked him among the top linebackers in those two particular drills. He led the pack in both of those sessions and also went on to run an unofficial 4.65 in the 40-yard dash before turning heads again in the individual position skill work.
"I feel like I did well overall. I feel like I showed my athleticism and I feel like I showed that even though I'm 246 pounds, I can still move well for being that weight," George said. "Overall, I feel good with what I did today, and I'm hoping everybody else does, too."
