In his first start of 2025, Bailey Falter did as much as he could to keep the Pirates hanging around in their eventual 5-4 extra inning loss to the Marlins on Saturday at loanDepot Park.
The left-hander threw six innings, gave up seven hits, two earned runs and struck out four while walking none. He threw 87 pitches, 56 strikes and mixed in all four of his pitches evenly while drawing 40 swings and nine whiffs.
"I felt really good. I know exactly what we need to do in this next bullpen session," Falter said. "Gotta get a little bit more of an understanding with my breaking stuff out of the stretch. I feel like I'm just a tick late. Out of the windup went really well today. I just gotta be better when we score a run. I gotta get out there and put up a zero and get these guys back in the dugout."
Falter gave up his first run in the fifth inning when Xavier Edwards hit a sacrifice fly to left field to bring home Nick Fortes. Derek Hill then drove home Dane Myers with a ground-rule double in the bottom of the sixth inning to tie the game at two.
Here's Falter's full media availability from tonight:
• The Pirates continued their base-stealing efforts tonight as they swiped six more bags which increases their season total to 12. That mark sets a new club record for steals through the first three games of the season since at least 1900, per the Elias Sports Bureau. The Pirates stole 10 bases in the first three games of the 1907 season. That mark is also the second-most by any Major League Baseball team through its first three games in the Live-Ball Era.
• Oneil Cruz is also the fifth Pirate since at least 1900 to steal a base in at least three straight games to begin a season, joining Andrew McCutchen (2013), Lee Lacy (1983), Omar Moreno (1982) and Fred Clarke (1903).
