Johnson being precautious with left foot bone bruise
Termarr Johnson is being precautious with a left foot bone bruise that has sidelined him since March 7 but insists that everything is fine and he'll be "good" for the opening day wherever he starts this season.
Johnson, who finished the 2024 season with Class AA Altoona, was removed from the Pirates' Spring Breakout roster Friday morning because of the injury but said he was still able to take straight on ground balls with the team. He said he's trying to be careful with the injury in an effort to avoid a setback before the start of the season.
Johnson said the injury was an "overcompensating" issue from an injury he suffered in the Arizona Fall League. He didn't go into too many details but said that he'll be fine. He's not quite hitting yet, but he's been throwing and working on his defense.
To ensure he's ready, Johnson said the Pirates' training staff has been using a plethora of different treatments to rehab the injury to make sure he's good to go.
"We’re doing ultrasound, contrast, red light, doing a lot of different stuff just to get prepare for the season," Johnson said. "I think it’s in a good spot now, we’re taking it day by day. I’m very happy with what they’ve been doing for me and everything like that. Hopefully, I’ll be able to get back on the field with activities within the weekend or the start of next week. I was able to get a couple of ground balls today, which is really good."
Johnson started the spring in big-league camp before being re-assigned to minor-league camp on March 1. He played in four games, tallied seven at-bats and recorded just one hit and one RBI.
The 20-year-old middle infielder is entering a big year. He climbed to Class AA Altoona last season and played in 14 games where he hit .229/.316./.396 with a .712 OPS, two home runs and eight RBIs. This came after playing 110 games for Class A+ Greensboro where he hit .238/.372/.385 with a .757 OPS. Johnson also added 13 home runs and 46 RBIs in 395 at-bats.
