Bryan Reynolds is dealing with right triceps soreness, Pirates' senior director of sports medicine Todd Tomczyk said this morning.
Reynolds has been the team's designated hitter the past two games and is scheduled to start there again today. Tomczyk said the medical staff here in Tampa, Fla. is assessing him today to see "what type of availability he has" moving forward.
"He has been able to hit, been able to play," Tomczyk said. "He's had a little soreness when throwing, so they're taking the necessary steps, learning as much as we can, as fast as we can to see when he can be a full complementary player."
More from Tomczyk:
• Jared Jones will be evaluated by staff on Friday in Pittsburgh, Tomczyk said. If things go well, Jones can begin a two-handed plyo ball program.
"That is a benchmark that we feel is an attainable one, depending on if everything checks out with Dr. (Darren) Frank and then we communicate with Dr. (Keith) Meister."
• Nick Gonzales is back in Pittsburgh. He is playing catch in a seated position and is completing upper-body lifts and modified lower-body lifts. He is non-weight bearing and is in a walking boot. He is also using a scooter to get around. However, there is no definitive time table for his return.
"We are going to repeat CT scans, serial imaging in several weeks. At that point, we’ll have a better prognosis on a return to play calendar," Tomczyk said.
• Spencer Horwitz has started hitting coach-pitch batting practice in the batting cages, which is a step forward as he was just hitting soft toss before. Depending how he responds, Tomczyk said Horwitz' work "intensity" will ramp up in the next 10 days.
"Coach pitch for now, there is a little velocity, not 100% off a machine yet, but that is coming," Tomczyk said.
• Dauri Moreta is set to throw his first live bullpen on Friday down in Bradenton, Fla., Tomzcyk said: "Big monumental step for him in his return from Tommy John.”
• Lastly, Johan Oviedo is five weeks removed from his right-lat injury and has progressed to light plyometric activities. He will be re-examined in Pittsburgh around the six-week mark to assess his throwing status.
