Edward Olivares had a golden chance to put the Pirates up in the 10th inning when, as the automatic runner, he'd taken third base on a groundout, then tried to take home on a wild pitch ... but after an initial safe call, he was ruled out on a challenge from the Atlanta dugout:
I spoke one-on-one with Olivares afterward and, when I asked if there was anything he regretted about the sequence, he replied simply, "He got me right with the tip of his glove right when I was getting close to home plate," referring to the tag by pitcher Daysbel Hernández.
Olivares easily could've brought up how a headfirst slide beats that tag 100 times out of 100, but he went with the feet and never got either foot to the plate.
Derek Shelton took no issue with the sequence when it came up, saying, "It’s one of those … if he doesn’t run and we don’t score, everybody says, ‘Wait, why didn’t he run?’ It was bang-bang, and he made an instantaneous read. You have to trust the player there. It just didn’t go our way.” He also credited Atlanta catcher Travis d'Arnaud and Hernandez with "a great play."
