Trent Grisham was responsible for most of the offensive harm done to Bailey Falter in the Pirates' loss to the Yankees this afternoon at PNC Park.
Grisham hit a 2-0 fastball over the Roberto Clemente Wall in right field for a solo home run in the third inning ...
... and continued to torment Falter by going the other way for a three-run shot in a six-run fifth inning that ended the left-hander's day without recording an out in the inning:
"The first one was a mistake, for sure. The second at-bat, probably should have thrown another slider," said Falter, who missed with a 2-2 fastball on the outer edge the second time around. "Tried to rear back and let one eat. Guy's a good hitter. Good hitters over there. It is what it is."
Falter, who previously threw six solid innings against the Marlins in his first start of the season on March 29, ended up allowing seven earned runs on seven hits with a walk and five strikeouts. Austin Wells drove in the game's first run with an RBI single off Falter in the second and three more earned runs were charged to him when Anthony Volpe cleared the bases off Colin Holderman in the fifth.
"Just lost the command there a little bit in the fifth inning. Just a horrendous job by me in the fifth," Falter said. "Team takes the lead, does everything they can to get the lead for me and then I go out there for the next inning and I can't get one out. Just can't happen. It's unfortunate."
