Prospect countdown No. 2: Hitting adjustments key for Griffin
This is an ongoing series counting down the top five prospects in the Pirates organization. We will conclude the series tomorrow with Bubba Chandler.
When the Pirates selected Konnor Griffin with the ninth overall pick in the 2024 draft, they were getting perhaps the most athletic player available, who also came with the highest upside.
Griffin stole over 80 bases in his final year in high school and, after bulking up in the offseason, looks more than capable of eventually being a 30-home run threat.
He's also very capable of playing two premium positions, shortstop and center field. The natural skill set leans towards the outfield, but he will get a shot to stick in the dirt going forward.
The biggest question throughout the draft process was the hit tool. There were questions about the contact and the quality of contact he'd make with his setup at the plate.
Through offseason work, he's made some adjustments and is on the right path. The sky seems to be the limit for Griffin. There's a chance he struggles out the gate as he continues to make adjustments, but it feels like it won't be long until his natural skills take over.
