Colin Holderman continues to battle through struggles that have carried over from the second half of the 2024 season.
Holderman, who has allowed at least one earned run in four of his five appearances this season, wasn't tasked with a high-leverage situation this afternoon. It was an important spot, though. He replaced Bailey Falter with two men on and nobody out in the top of the fifth inning.
One pitch in, he surrendered a free baserunner by plunking Aaron Judge. Then, after striking out Jazz Chisholm Jr., Holderman left a 2-2 cutter up on the outer third and Anthony Volpe sent it to deep center field for a bases-clearing double that turned a one-run deficit into an 8-4 lead for the visitors:
"Just got to make pitches. I've got to keep going," said Holderman, who struck out two batters in his inning of work. "There's been some unlucky stuff, and there's also been stuff that's self-inflicted. Going in there today, I thought I made some good pitches and they just didn't go my way. I thought I made a good pitch to Volpe there. I didn't think it was going to go that far. It did. So it's something I've got to figure out. No one cares more than I do, and I'm going to keep going, and I'm gonna fix it."
Here's Holderman's full media availability:
• Falter hit Chisholm with a pitch to begin the second inning, ending the longest streak in the major leagues without hitting a batter: 1,124 plate appearances. As rare as it was, the mistake proved costly as Chisholm went on to steal second base and score on an RBI single by AustinWells that gave the Yankees a 1-0 lead.
• Ke'Bryan Hayes put together his second multi-hit game of the season by going 2-for-3 with a walk and an RBI double in the fourth inning. He's put together some good swings as of late and has at least one hit in each of his last four games. He's 6-for-15 over that span.
