After being placed on the 10-day injured list with a non-displaced fracture in his left ankle, Nick Gonzales is heading back to Pittsburgh and will have a CT scan on Monday, Ben Cherington said on his weekly radio show this afternoon.
“We’ll learn a little bit more there, don’t expect to learn a lot more,” said Cherington, who confirmed the injury was initially sustained during the latter portion of Grapefruit League action. "It was sore, the x-rays we did in Bradenton were negative and did not show anything. When that happens, you treat it symptomatically, and when he tells us he’s ready to play, then he’s ready to play."
Gonzales was removed from the game on opening day after hitting a two-run home run in the top of the sixth inning. He hobbled around the bases before being replaced by Adam Frazier at second base.
“Now, we gotta let that thing heal. Bottom line, as simple as that,” Cherington said. “He’ll be in a boot for a little while. He’s going to come back and play this year, no doubt, but he’s got a fractured bone and we’ve gotta let it heal.”
More from Cherington:
• The Pirates' GM said that during spring training, he saw a “sense of focus and collective energy toward the most important thing, winning.” Cherington said he believes the team comes out of spring training with the "deepest talent and focus at the upper levels that we’ve had since I’ve been here."
• Cherington on the early injury issues the Pirates have experienced: "Good teams have injuries. We have to be strong enough to overcome that.”
• Despite the fact that he's starting the year at Class AAA Indianapolis, the Pirates don't lack confidence in HenryDavis. Cherington said he really believes in the direction Davis is headed.
"He’s come so far defensively to the point where there is unanimous confidence across our organization and major-league clubhouse about him catching at the major-league level, no questions. He’ll continue to work on that, continue to improve on that, that will go forever, but he’s become, in our minds, a strong defensive catcher and he’s worked his tail off on that. It gives him a weapon at the major-league level that, candidly, two or three years ago he didn’t have," Cherington said. "Now, making adjustments offensively, that’s the thing he’s got to figure out. He’s got a history of hitting everywhere he’s been. The only place he’s never hit is the major-league level. It seems bound to happen at some point when he gets the next opportunity. That’s what he’s focused on.”
