Alexander Canario provided one of the few bright spots for a stagnant offense in tonight's loss to the Reds at Great American Ball Park.
Playing in just his seventh game in a Pirates uniform, Canario reached base via walk on two occasions and, in the top of the fifth inning, got all of an Andrew Abbott fastball for his first home run of the season, a solo shot that accounted for one of the team's four hits on the night:
"Even the ball he hit off (Emilio) Pagan there in the ninth, he hit hard and (Noelvi) Marte made a nice play on it. He had the homer to right-center," Derek Shelton said. "He probably had our most consistent at-bats throughout the game."
Hitting home runs isn't something Canario is unfamiliar with. He hasn't exactly had the opportunities to show off his power at the big-league level, but he does have a 37-home-run season under his belt during his time in the Cubs' system in 2022. More of what Canario showed on this particular night would certainly be welcomed.
• Enmanuel Valdez helped provide the other run-scoring hit for the Pirates in this one, driving in Canario with an RBI double in the seventh inning. Three of Valdez's four hits have gone for extra bases this season.
• Through his first three outings with the Pirates, Andrew Heaney has registered 18 strikeouts, the third-most by a Pirates left-hander in that span since 1901. The only others with more: Francisco Liriano (25 in 2013) and Zach Duke (21 in 2005).
• It wasn't necessarily a night to remember with an 0-for-3 performance at the plate, but HenryDavis "had a blast" in his first big-league game of the season. Davis was recalled from Class AAA Indianapolis earlier in the day and didn't manage to produce how he would have liked to with two pop outs and a ground out, but he did gather some positive takeaways from some of the swings he took, including one that resulted in a foul ball deep down the left-field line in the seventh inning.
"I saw everything today well. Take good cuts and when I get something over the heart, obviously wish I kept that one fair, pulled the trigger a little too quick on it," Davis said. "Honestly, when I'm doing that, I'm at my best because I'm seeing it early. See that a half-second later, it's second-deck. Just keeping that, try to bring good energy behind the plate. Just try my best to do my job, wherever I'm at."
