Mound visit: Conine's 'catch of the year' robs Suwinski
There were plenty of things that the Pirates did wrong in their 5-4 12-inning loss to the Marlins on Saturday evening at loanDepot Park, but the Marlins also did things like this:I mean...
With the game tied at three in the top of the eighth and no outs, Jack Suwinski got ahold of 1-1 changeup that Anthony Bender left at the bottom of the zone. It looked like Suwinski had broken the tie with one swing of the bat, until Griffin Conine, the son of Marlins great, Jeff Conine, who will be inducted into the Marlins hall of fame on Sunday, reached well above the fence to rob Suwinski of a game-changing hit.
"Just had gotten in the game, obviously, saw it go way up, thought for sure it was gone off the bat and it hung up for me," Conine told the Marlins Radio Network. "When I jumped, I didn't really know where the fence was and luckily I timed it pretty well and it snow coned right at the tip of my glove. I barely got to it.
Marlins center fielder Derek Hill chimed in mid-interview with a "Catch of the year, doesn't matter what anyone else says."
Suwinski went 1-for-5 on this day, his first start of the 2025 season. He drove in Bryan Reynolds with double in the top of the first inning that flew over Dane Myers' head in right field for the first run of the game.
Oneil Cruz was also sent home on the play, after jogging between first and second despite their being two outs, and was thrown out at the plate to end the Pirates' first-inning threat. While that hit, which came on a 1-1 curveball low in the zone, showcased the improvements that Suwinski has made through the spring, his near home run was the one that would've made the difference.
"Yea, that’s a tough one," Suwinski said. "Obviously, great play, hats off. I would’ve liked to see that go over. That would’ve broke the tie, but yea, that hurts."
Derek Shelton thought it encapsulated how tonight's game played out: "That ball was hit really hard and Jack had really good swings. Just seemed like that summed up the game right there. A ball that's a homer gets robbed."
