The Pirates have optioned Jason Delay to Class AAA Indianapolis. Along with that move, Darick Hall, Nick Solak, Alika Williams, Abrahan Gutierrez, Matt Gorski,Bryce Johnson and Yohan Ramírez have been reassigned to minor league spring training. There are now 42 players remaining in camp.
So, with these latest roster moves, the first base competition is down to Billy Cook, Nick Yorke, D.J. Stewart and Jared Triolo, who is all but assured a roster spot and will bounce around the infield.
Also, Delay being optioned to Indy shines a bright light on the back-up catcher role. We'll see Endy Rodriguez and Henry Davis get a bunch of reps over the next five games to see who captures that spot. Rodriguez has been better at the plate, but I think Davis has been the better defensive catcher. We'll see how it plays out.
