With his solo home run in the second inning of the Pirates' 3-2 loss to the Marlins on Sunday at loanDepot Park, Andrew McCutchen recorded the 800th extra-base hit of his career.
McCutchen trails only Freddie Freeman (885) and Paul Goldschmidt (833) among active players. His 611 extra-base hits rank fifth in Pirates history. He's also only three RBIs short of 1,100 for his Major League career and ranks fifth among active players.
Speaking in front of his locker stall in the Pirates' clubhouse here in Miami, McCutchen was more focused on the loss than his personal accolade.
"I could care less about the stuff that I do, the accolades," McCutchen said. "It still hurts, no matter what, when you lose like we have, especially the three games when we are in a position where you feel like you should win them. But, those, for me, I feel that more than I do the personal accolades. Those will continue to happen, no matter what; it’s inevitable, as long as I continue to stay on the field and do my job."
• McCutchen's home run also put him into a tenth-place tie with Arky Vaughn for most runs scored in Pirates history (936).
• McCutchen's former teammate, Nyjer Morgan, was also in attendance for the game and McCutchen said it was special to accomplish a feat in front of him: "Even just his presence sitting over there, you feel it. It’s a lost art in this sport, you don’t see many personalities like that anymore in the game. He was great, man. He was one of my guys. It was cool that I was able to throw up the T for him after hitting the homer."
• Through the Pirates' four games in Miami, the starting rotation -- Paul Skenes, Mitch Keller, Bailey Falter and Andrew Heaney -- gave up six earned runs while the bullpen gave up seven. However, the bullpen also gave up 10 total runs this series as defensive miscues mounted late in games.
