Pirates fall to 5-10 with a 5-2 loss to the Reds. AndrewHeaney allowed four runs on a grand slam to Elly De La Cruz over six innings and the offense was limited to just four hits for a second straight game. I'll add more from the clubhouse here.
• Derek Shelton pinpointed the two hit by pitches that really proved costly in this one. Heaney wasn’t too happy about it, either, obviously. Said the 3-2 fastball to De La Cruz was located where he wanted it.
• AndrewMcCutchen was 1 for 4 tonight and had a couple hard hit balls out to center, including one that almost got out in the fourth inning.
"I was shocked it didn't get out," Shelton said.
• Oneil Cruz was available to pinch hit if needed tonight, Shelton said. Good sign. An even better sign would be seeing him back in the lineup tomorrow afternoon.
• Shelton on Kyle Nicolas' season debut: "He did a good job. He got a ground ball and we dropped it. He came in, and we gotta stay away from the walk there, but he came in, did his job with the stretch of hitters we wanted. We got a ground ball double play ball and we just didn't turn it."
• Just spent a few minutes with Bryan Reynolds. Obviously one of many disappointed hitters in this room. He believes embracing more of an aggressive approach as a collective unit is key to getting the offense on track. As for himself, he’s feeling in between at the moment. I'll have more from Reynolds in story form tonight.
