Colin Holderman has been placed on the 15-day injured list with a right knee sprain and Chase Shugart has officially been recalled from Class AAA Indianapolis.
Holderman has struggled mightily to start the season, allowing five runs over 4 2/3 innings through five appearances. He's walked four batters, hit one and struck out six. In his one inning of work against the Yankees on Saturday, Holderman hit Aaron Judge with a pitch, allowed a bases-clearing double to Anthony Volpe and struck out two.
On his weekly radio show, BenCherington said Holderman felt something on the second-to-last pitch he threw yesterday. Imaging has not been conducted just yet.
“We felt like, given how he reported this morning still feeling a little bit sore with some swelling in there, that it just didn't make sense to push him to go pitch compromised and potentially open up a bigger problem," Cherington said. "Given where we are, we kind of need all hands on deck, we need everyone to be available."
Shugart was acquired from the Red Sox in January after being designated for assignment. He appeared in six games for Boston last season, allowing four runs on eight hits and totaling eight strikeouts with three walks in 8 2/3 innings. He made five appearances and pitched five innings for the Pirates this spring, allowing five runs on nine hits with two walks and two strikeouts. He made one appearance in Indianapolis, with two scoreless innings.
"He's had success in the big leagues, threw the ball really well in the first outing in Indianapolis," Cherington said. "Looking forward to seeing what he does for us."
