The Altoona Curve announced their break-camp roster to start the 2025 season, and it features some notable top prospects in the Pirates' system.
Altoona will begin the year with six of the Pirates' top 30 prospects, according to Baseball America. It was also announced that Hunter Barco would be the opening day starter. Barco spent some time in major league camp and pitched in the Spring Breakout.
Some of the other notable names:
• Termarr Johnson: He got a cup of coffee to close out the 2024 season, hitting .229/.316/.396 with two home runs and eight RBI in 14 games played. He'll start the year at 20 years old.
• Jack Brannigan: Drafted as a two-way player out of Notre Dame, Brannigan has yet to pitch since going pro, playing a strong defensive infield for the Greensboro Grasshoppers in 2023 and 2024 (injuries have slowed his progress). He has 30 home runs in 115 games.
• Anthony Solometo: Part of that 2021 draft class that featured Bubba Chandler and Henry Davis, Solometo has hit a bit of a wall in Altoona, and 2025 will be his third at this level.
• Alessandro Ercolani: Signed out of San Marino, a landlocked country in Italy, Ercolani put together a strong year in High-A Greensboro after shifting to more of a swingman/multi-inning guy out of the bullpen. He'll begin the season as a 20-year-old.
• Wilber Dotel: An explosive arm who has topped 100 mph with his fastball, Dotel hit triple-digits in both innings and strikeouts last year with Greensboro. He's a little more on the raw side and has garnered some comparisons to Luis Ortiz as a potential late-bloomer.
