The offensive performances continue to get worse and worse. This time, the Pirates collect just two hits in a 4-0 loss that leads to a three-game sweep. I'll add more from the clubhouse here.
• A very quiet clubhouse, as one might expect following that one.
• Derek Shelton said Hunter Greene had good stuff today, but that hitters could have been out front a little bit more to adjust to him.
• The Pirates did have two key chances to score in the first two innings, but they went squandered. Shelton on those: “We have to capitalize on opportunities when we do have them.”
•I'll have more from Isiah Kiner-Falefa on the continued offensive struggles this afternoon, but he said "this is unacceptable." He added of the upcoming stretch following this sweep: "We'll see what we're made of."
• Carmen Mlodzinski said he felt like his ability to throw his sweeper for strikes allowed him to make up for missing with fastballs early in the game. The free passes, as they did to Bailey Falter and Andrew Heaney the last two days, did hurt him later in the outing, though.
“Not just today, but the whole series they capitalized on free passes. That’s how baseball goes. Usually walks do score and they end up hurting you," Mlodzinski said. "They did that really well this series against us. They were able to capitalize on the free bags.”
• I asked Mlodzinski if he thinks this group is capable of bouncing back from this poor start: “Yeah, for sure. We’ve got (Paul) Skenes going tomorrow and I think everybody in this room is confident he’s going to be able to do this job to the best of his ability. It’s not the first time you’re going to struggle against a team in your division. We’re going to face these guys plenty of times and it’s just about how we’re going to bounce back. We’re going to put the work in and figure out what we need to do and what we need to adjust in order to make that bounce back and start winning some series.”
