The Pirates are calling up Tsung-Che Cheng, the organization's No. 17 prospect, according to MLB Pipeline, today. He has a locker stall here at PNC Park.
Derek Shelton concerned the move this afternoon and said that Jared Triolo (low back discomfort) is going to the 10-day IL. Shelton said Triolo's back locked up on the field yesterday, 15 minutes before the game started and he is still undergoing further testing.
Cheng played in 126 games with Class AA Altoona last season and finished the year with Class AAA Indianapolis. Between the two levels he hit .225/.329/.341 with a .676 OPS. He also added 11 home runs and 55 RBIS.
Through 14 at bats for Indianapolis this season, Cheng has tallied just one hit and has walked once with six strikeouts. But, Cheng has stood out and was promoted because of his defense.
"Just defensively how dynamic he is," Shelton said about what stuck out of Cheng in the spring. "I think we saw the full scope of it in spring training, regardless of if he played second or short. He can really defend. He's played third a little bit in the minor leagues and with losing Triolo we need someone to play short as the backup and right now we felt he fit us the best."
Here's Shelton's full media availability from this morning:
