Wilkes-Barre/Scranton will have the services of defenseman Harrison Brunicke for the remainder of the season and the Calder Cup playoffs.
The Penguins this afternoon assigned Brunicke to Wilkes-Barre/Scranton after his WHL team, the Kamloops Blazers, failed to qualify for the postseason. Brunicke will turn 19 years old in May, making him still too young to move to the AHL full-time next season. His options for next season will be the same as this year -- the NHL or back to junior. But because his junior season is over, he's eligible to play in the AHL for the rest of this year.
Brunicke, the Penguins' 44th overall pick in last summer's draft, set career highs in points this season with 30 (five goals, 25 assists) in 41 games, having missed significant time midseason with an injury. Brunicke was one of the standout of the Penguins' training camp and preseason. He had potential to make Canada's World Junior roster in December but his injury prevented him from attending the selection camp.
