Vasily Ponomarev scored Wilkes-Barre/Scranton's lone goal in a 7-1 loss to the Monsters in Cleveland on Friday. Ponomarev's 15th goal of the season came on the power play, with Avery Hayes and Chase Stillman recording assists.
Filip Larsson stopped 29 of 36 shots. Harrison Brunicke took three minor penalties, two for slashing and one for tripping. Dan Renouf got a 10-minute misconduct for roughing in the third, and Kyle Jackson got a 10-minute misconduct for cross-checking in the final minute. Jack Beck was recalled from Wheeling and made his AHL debut. and had one shot and was a minus-1 on the right side of the fourth line.
The good news: The Checkers lost to the Bruins, so they didn't gain any room over the Penguins in the division race. The Penguins and Checkers are still tied for second, but the Checkers have the tiebreaker. The top two teams get a first-round bye -- something that is massively beneficial given that the AHL first round is only best-of-three. Incredibly easy for good teams to get upset in the first round without the bye.
