Alex Ovechkin on Friday tied Wayne Gretzky for the all-time goals record, netting two in a win over the Blackhawks to hit the 894-goal mark.
Sidney Crosby cracked a smile when asked after the Penguins' win over the Stars if he tuned into that game to watch Ovechkin's record chase.
"Yeah, definitely," Crosby said. "It was pretty exciting, that last couple of minutes, when he kept pushing and trying to get that next one. I think for anyone who is a fan of the game and appreciates what he's doing, it's pretty cool to see. I thought he was going to get it before the end of that one. It was just a matter of time the last couple of years, especially the way he's done what he's done this year. At this point, it's just a matter of time."
A couple of years ago at the 2023 All-Star Game, I asked Ovechkin about how his relationship with Crosby has evolved over the years, and he spoke about how the two stay connected through milestones and other big career moments.
"We're good friends," Ovechkin told me. "We talk to each other. If he has some milestones coming up, I'll call him or shoot him a text. The first couple of years, it was kind of a different relationship. We were young, but now we've matured. ... I'm pretty sure that when me and him are going to be retired, we're going to have a couple of beers together and talk about the whole thing."
