The Penguins have recalled forwards Ville Koivunen and Rutger McGroarty from Wilkes-Barre/Scranton and re-assigned forward Joona Koppanen to the AHL.
Koivunen, 21, posted 21 goals and 34 assists in 62 games at the AHL level this season. He leads all AHL rookies in points and ranks sixth among all AHL players in points. His 21 goals tied him for the team lead.
McGroarty, 20, registered 14 goals and 39 points in 60 games. This is McGroarty's second stint in the NHL after he played in three NHL games in October out of training camp and went without a point while compiling a minus-1 rating.
Both McGroarty and Koivunen have been Wilkes-Barre's most productive players since Feb. 15. McGroarty leads the team in scoring in that span with eight goals and 10 assists in 19 games. Koivunen ranks second in team scoring in the same span with six goals and 10 assists.
Koppanen had his first NHL goal and a minus-2 rating in five games with the Penguins. He was largely fine in a bottom-six role, and showed much more pace and physicality than he did in his first stint with the Penguins last sason.
The moves take up two of the Penguins' four non-emergency recalls left for the remainder of the season.
