The Penguins only have two games left in the regular season, but Phil Tomasino has a chance to return from a concussion before everything wraps up.
Tomasino returned to practice today, at first sporting a white no-contact jersey. However, he was able to go full contact during the second-half of a short practice, taking part in rushes on the fourth line and trading reps with Valtteri Puustinen on the second power-play unit.
"We'll see how he responds today," Mike Sullivan said. "He'll more than likely be a game-time decision."
Tomasino sustained a concussion during the Penguins' 6-1 loss to the Lightning on March 25. He's gone through the recovery process relatively quickly, which is not always certain.
"It's good for Phil. The one thing we've learned over the years, in respect to concussions, is that they're all very different," Sullivan said. "Some guys recover more quickly than others. My experience has been it's not all that easy to even try to predict how players will respond. They go through a protocol that's well defined, a certain criteria. Obviously, the player's health and safety is the utmost priority, especially with those types of injuries. So, the fact that he's been able to recover as quickly as he has is certainly encouraging."
A good indicator that Tomasino could return for Sunday afternoon's game against the Bruins at PPG Paints Arena is the team re-assigning Emil Bemstrom to Wilkes-Barre/Scranton this morning. As Taylor Haase pointed out, the team only had 12 healthy forwards on the roster before sending Bemstrom down.
