It's not getting the attention of Alexander Ovechkin's goal countown, but Sidney Crosby's pursuit of another Wayne Gretzky record -- two more points tonight here at Amalie Arena and he'll become the first in NHL history with 20 point-per-game seasons, one more than Gretzky -- boggles the mind unto itself.
Which might, of course, be part of the problem.
The preeminent records in sports history tend to be the simplest, the ones the involve the least explanation. Fastest man. Strongest woman. Most home runs. Most touchdowns. Most goals.
So Sid needing two points to reach 80, which would match the maximum number of games he could play since he missed those two in New York and Philadelphia ... then weighing that against how many games everyone's missed, how Gretzky averaged 1.92 points per game to Mario Lemieux's second-place 1.88 to Sid's 1.25 that ranks ninth all-time, how the eras differed ... it's too much. It's got no chance.
Nonetheless spectacularly impressive.
