The Steelers will most likely be without George Pickens when they travel to Philadelphia for Sunday's game against the Eagles. Without their top receiver, the offense has to find a way to remain productive through the air.
Maybe, just maybe, this will be Mike Williams' time to shine.
Williams was acquired ahead of the trade deadline to address the lack of depth at receiver, but has had a minimal impact on the offense. He did make a big play right away, catching a game-winning touchdown pass in Week 10 at Washington. But, then he went three straight games without a target. It wasn't until this past week when Pickens was sidelined with his hamstring injury that Williams was targeted four times and caught three passes for 36 yards.
With Pickens likely out this Sunday, the best case scenario for the offense would be for one guy to help make up for Pickens' loss instead of trying to do it by committee. Williams would love to be that guy:
"Somebody's gotta step up," Williams said after Wednesday's practice. "That's the main thing. Somebody goes down, another player's gotta step up. We've all got a job to do. Next man up mentality."
Williams had a vet rest day on Wednesday, but he's feeling more and more comfortable in the offense. He shares Mike Tomlin's optimism that it's just a matter of time before Williams becomes a more impactful player in this offense. This situation might just force them to expedite the process.
But, whoever it is, Williams is right. Somebody -- anybody -- has to step up.
