RICHMOND, Va. -- Forty-seven years ago this week, John Candelaria pulled off one of the toughest tasks in professional sports: He threw a no-hitter for the Pittsburgh Baseball Club! The Pirates' mere six no-nos over nearly a century and a half of existence trails every other team that can trace its origin back to the earliest days of Major League Baseball, with the Tigers not particularly close with nine.
Still, the Candy Man made it look relatively easy that August night at Three Rivers, as he sliced through the Dodgers' formidable lineup... needing just 101 pitches to secure his feat.
