Stan Savran, one of the most notable sports broadcasters to ever cover Pittsburgh sports, died Monday at his home at the age of 76.
Mr. Savran, born Stanley Savransky, was born in Cleveland but became a staple in Pittsburgh in 1976, starting at WWSW-AM radio. He then transitioned to TV, though he continued to find homes in the radio and newspaper industries throughout his career spanning five decades. He later hosted on Steelers Nation Radio and hosted pre-game and post-game shows for the Pirates and Penguins.
Of course, his work most notably included his "SportsBeat" show alongside Guy Junker, which ran from 1991-2009, the longest sports-centric television program in the city's history.
"The Godfather" of Pittsburgh sports talk was inducted into the Western Chapter of the Pennsylvania Sports Hall of Fame in 2003, and he is a member of the Pittsburgh Pirates Media Wall of Fame.
In 2022, Mr. Savran revealed he had been battling lung cancer, and he underwent surgery to amputate his foot in April.
RIP to the one and only Stan Savran. Long before we'd met, even before he grew into a living legend, I'll never forget the kindness he showed my late Mom, also a radio host, at their shared studio in East McKeesport.
