Blueger: Report on how he was told of trade 'not accurate' taken at PPG Paints Arena (Penguins)

Teddy Blueger

There was a report from The Athletic this week regarding the way Teddy Blueger found out that he was traded from the Penguins to the Golden Knights back on March 1.

The report said that the team was at dinner at Bern's Steakhouse in Tampa, Fla. as part of the fathers' trip and that Blueger learned of the trade through social media and left the restaurant with his father, but not before being consoled by Sidney Crosby, who was reported to have told his teammates, "That's not how we do things in Pittsburgh," then remained silent for most of the night.

That runs counter to what Blueger said himself in an interview with reporters in Las Vegas the next day. Blueger said that he and his father were called into Brian Burke's hotel room, and Burke told him there of the trade:

Still, a debate surrounding the accuracy of the report was spurred on social media.

I reached out to Blueger directly Thursday, who called the report in The Athletic "not accurate at all, actually."

Blueger said that he found out about the trade shortly after the team arrived to the hotel in Tampa. He said that Burke pulled Blueger and his father aside right away in the lobby and asked them to come up to his hotel room.

It was Burke and Mike Sullivan who met Blueger and his father in Burke's room, and they told Blueger together that he had been traded.

The dinner at the restaurant hadn't even happened yet. Blueger and his father were supposed to go to the dinner that night, but didn't end up going after they learned of the trade. They did stop at the restaurant that night to say goodbye to his teammates who were there before leaving.

And for the record -- it wasn't Bern's Steakhouse they went to, either. It was a nice place called Jackson's Bistro Bar and Sushi right on the water by the team hotel.

Blueger seemed a bit amused by the report nonetheless and quipped that if Crosby was silent at the dinner (which he can't verify, because he wasn't there, other than to briefly stop by), he hopes that it was "because he was upset I got traded."
