MONTREAL -- The Penguins' fifth and final pick of the 2022 NHL draft here in Montreal was Luke Devlin, a center out of St. Andrews College, a high school in Canada.
Devlin is listed at 6-foot-2, 185 pounds and a left-handed shot. He led St. Andrews in scoring last season, scoring 19 goals and 28 assist in 44 games.
Penguins director of amateur scouting Nick Pryor called Devlin a "big center who moves extremely well for his size."
"He brings a lot of compete," Pryor added. "And he does a really good job on both sides of the puck playing a responsible game, and he plays a really competitive game as well."
Devlin's career has taken an interesting path to this point. He's originally from Memphis, Tenn., and has played Canadian high school hockey the last two years, representing Team USA in smaller tournaments at times as well. He's set to play for junior hockey for the West Kelowna Warriors in the British Columbia Hockey League next season, and then will make the move to college hockey at Cornell in 2023-24.
"Cornell has done a good job with those player types over the years," Pryor said of Devlin. "We're really excited about where he's going in the future at Cornell."
Devlin is the son of Matt Devlin, the play-by-play broadcaster for the NBA's Toronto Raptors.
SCOUTS SAY
HockeyProspect.com: "Big kid who moves well, particularly for his size. Really tough, loves to initiate contact. He’s a bully. Old-school tough. ... Good net-front guy on the power play. Uses his frame well in front. Finished his checks when he had the opportunity. Not flashy with the puck but is smart with his positioning and knows where to go on the ice."
Warriors head coach, GM Simon Ferguson: "Luke is a player we followed for a couple seasons, and he brings size, speed and an ability to make plays and put the puck in the net."
Warriors broadcaster Chase Johnston: "He's a complete player who brings some size up front.
