SUNRISE, Fla. -- Bryan Rust sustained an apparent injury early in the third period of the Penguins 5-4 overtime loss to the Panthers in Sunrise, Fla. on Thursday night.

Rust was the recipient of a big, open-ice hit from Panthers defenseman MacKenzie Weegar in the opening shift of the third period:

Rust immediately skated to the bench and went down the tunnel. From watching the hit and Rust move afterward, it's not clear what the injury might be. I saw Rust after the game, and he didn't appear to be walking with any kind of limp.

Mike Sullivan said in his postgame press conference that Rust was still being evaluated and did not provide any more specifics.

The Penguins cancelled the practice that was originally scheduled for Friday at 12 p.m., so we can likely expect some kind of update on Rust during Saturday's morning skate ahead of the home opener.
