CRANBERRY, Pa. -- The Penguins put defenseman Juuso Riikola and forward Michael Chaput on waivers on Friday.
If Riikola and Chaput go unclaimed, they can clear waivers on Saturday at 2 p.m.
They don't have to be assigned to Wilkes-Barre/Scranton immediately after clearing. After clearing waivers, a player can stay on the active NHL roster for up to 10 games played or 30 days -- whichever comes first -- before they would need waivers again to be re-assigned to the minors.
If Riikola clears and is assigned to Wilkes-Barre, only $1.125 million of his cap hit would come off of the Penguins' books because he's on a one-way contract. The other $25,000 of his cap hit would still count even while he's in Wilkes-Barre.
Goaltender Louis Domingue cleared waivers on Friday and was promptly assigned to Wilkes-Barre, bringing the number of players in camp down to 29. Domingue appeared in one preseason game for the Penguins, playing the second half of the Oct. 1 game in Buffalo. He stopped 20 of 21 shots in the win.
