It feels like every other day now there is good news and bad news with the Penguins' injury situation.
That was the case Tuesday.
The Penguins didn't skate as a team on Tuesday, but instead held an off-ice workout at the Lemieux Complex. Mike Sullivan provided updates on the injured players after.
Freddy Gaudreau, who left Sunday's game in New Jersey late in the second period, will be sidelined on a week-to-week basis with a lower-body injury. It's a significant loss, given how well Gaudreau had been playing in a bottom-six center role and on the penalty kill since he got an opportunity at the NHL level.
The good news is that Kasperi Kapanen skated on Tuesday for the first time. Ron Hextall said on Monday that he believes Kapanen is somewhere in the 10-14 day range until he is able to return to the lineup.
"Certainly, that's encouraging," Sullivan said.
Evgeni Malkin skated in the morning as well and is "continuing his progress." Hextall said on Monday that Malkin is expected to be back in the lineup before the regular season ends.
Brandon Tanev still has not skated and is continuing his off-ice rehab. Hextall said that he doesn't believe Tanev will be able to return to the lineup before the playoffs.
