The Steelers released linebacker Vince Williams earlier in the week in a cost-cutting move. Saturday, they agreed to terms with a potential replacement, adding Detroit free agent Miles Killebrew on a one-year deal according to the NFL Network.

Later in the day, they also added free agent offensive tackle Joe Haeg from the Buccaneers according to the NFL Network.

A safety when he entered the NFL as a fourth-round draft pick out of Southern Utah in 2016, Killebrew has transitioned to linebacker to better take advantage of his size (6-foot-2, 222 pounds). He's also a special teams ace.

Killebrew appeared in 78 games in five seasons with the Lions, including four starts. He has recorded 105 career tackles, two interceptions and forced one fumble.

In 2020, he finished tied for 10th in the NFL with 12 special teams tackles. He had 14 tackles on special teams in 2019 to rank fourth in the league.

Killebrew could compete with Marcus Allen, another converted safety, for a roster spot backing up Robert Spillane and Devin Bush at inside linebacker for the Steelers. His signing also could help offset the loss of special teams captain Jordan Dangerfield, a free agent safety who has yet to sign with any team this offseason.

Haeg, 28, is a product of South Dakota State. Originally a fifth-round draft pick of the Colts in 2016, he started 14 games as a rookie and 15 in 2017 at right tackle and guard. Haeg opened the 2018 season as the starter at right tackle again, but was injured two games into the season and spent the rest of the year on injured reserve.

Haeg signed with the Bucs in last year and made three starts for Tampa Bay in 2020. He lined up at a goal line tight end in the Super Bowl, but dropped a potential touchdown pass.

All told, Haeg has appeared in 68 career games, making 38 starts.

He'll compete with Chuks Okorafor and Zach Banner for playing time while also providing potential depth at guard.
