CINCINNATI -- Welcome to our new Steelers Live Wire, a round-the-clock feature that offers news that's fast, friendly to use and fun. The previous week's entry is right here.
As they say, here we go ...
STEELERS GET 5 IN
PRO BOWL
7 p.m. Monday: The Steelers led all teams in fan voting for the Pro Bowl. But it still netted them just five in the game, which will be played virtually this season on Madden.
Four of the five, however, are starters. Center Maurkice Pouncey, DT Cam Heyward, OLB T.J. Watt and FS Minkah Fitzpatrick will start for the AFC squad. G David DeCastro is also on the roster.
Snubbed for the Steelers included OLB Bud Dupree and DE Stephon Tuitt, both of whom had a legitimate shot to make it this year.
Watt and Fitzparick led their respective positions in fan voting league wide, as did long-snapper Kameron Canaday, who was not chosen. -- Lolley
TUITT TO HONOR
KEVIN GREENE
6:15 p.m. Monday: As news about the death of Kevin Greene reached the Steelers' locker room prior to the team's game Monday night against the Bengals, the man who now wears No. 91 -- Greene's number -- put out a statement on Instagram.
"It’s a Honor to Represent this legendary Number today for you and your family," Stephon Tuitt wrote. "I will make y’all proud. Prayers to Kevin Greene a legend." -- Lolley
KEVIN GREENE DIES AT 58
4:50 p.m. Monday: The Auburn Tigers Wire reports that Hall of Famer and former Steelers linebacker Kevin Greene has passed away at the age of 58:
Auburn legend Kevin Greene dies at the age of 58 https://t.co/xA9pcIfEH9
— Auburn Tigers Wire (@theauburnwire) December 21, 2020
Greene was drafted in the fifth round of the 1985 NFL Draft by the Rams, but signed with the Steelers as a free agent in 1993. He was a key cog in Bill Cowher's Blitzburgh Defense for three seasons. During that time he recorded 35.5 sacks, making the Pro Bowl in 1994 and 1995, and named as to the AP's All-Pro First Team in 1994. His efforts helped the Steelers make the playoffs all three seasons, including an AFC Championship game appearance in the 1994 season and a Super Bowl appearance in the 1995 season.
Greene finished his career, which also saw him play with the Panthers and 49ers, with 160 career sacks, the third-most in NFL history.
Team president Art Rooney II released this statement:
"We lost an amazing player and person this morning with the passing of Kevin Greene. His sudden death is a shock to us all as he was a close friend and teammate to so many people in the Steelers family.
"When Kevin came to the Steelers in 1993 he had an immediate impact. Paired with Greg Lloyd, Kevin and Greg led a defense that became known as Blitzburgh and went on to play in Super Bowl XXX. Kevin's energy and enthusiasm were inspiring for our team as well as our fans.
"My condolences go out to Kevin's wife, Tara, their children and the entire Greene family in this most difficult time. They will always be members of the Steelers family and in our thoughts and prayers." -- Carter
STEELERS ACTIVATE ISIDORA
3:50 p.m. Monday: The Steelers announced that they promoted guard Danny IsIdora to the active roster from the practice squad. Isidora is a former fifth round pick by the Vikings in the 2017 NFL Draft. He's started six NFL games with his most recent being for the Dolphins in Sept. 2019. Tight end Kevin Rader was released to make room for Isidora while linebacker Tegray Scales was added to the practice squad. -- Carter
CONNER OUT, SNELL STARTS
3:40 p.m. Monday: James Conner has been downgraded to out for Steelers vs. Bengals tonight and Benny Snell is set to start in his place. This will be Snell's third start of the season. His first game against the Ravens when he rushed for 60 yards on 16 carries and his second came against Washington when he rushed for five yards on eight carries. -- Carter
BEN'S NOT DONE YET
11:00 a.m. Monday: Adam Schefter tweeted Monday morning that Ben Roethlisberger intends to return next year for his 18th season. That's not exactly news, as it's been a known factor to this season that Roethlisberger would return in 2021. But it is confirmation of that in planning for next season. The Steelers are currently an estimated $21.7 million over the cap for next season, and Roethlisberger's current cap number would take up $41.2 million of the team's cap next season. -- Carter
IT'S GAME DAY!
4:09 a.m. Monday: The Browns didn't blow it, but that's all the better, since the Steelers can now clinch the AFC North tonight by beating the Bengals. We've got tons to get you ready, including a new Grind I just posted and not one but two new podcasts below:
TEAM ARRIVES

BROWNS COULD BLOW THIS
3:15 a.m. Sunday: It'll take a lot more than a semi-hot month to sell me on the Browns being real. Which is my way of suggesting the Steelers could very well clinch the AFC North championship tonight rather than tomorrow, should the Browns lost to the Giants in East Rutherford, N.J.
Also know that the Browns spent the week fielding questions about being sure they take the opponent seriously, easily one of the most 2020 things to happen in all of 2020.
Get this from Baker Mayfield: "We've got a big-picture focus, but the singular mindset is so important right now. We know we have to take care of business."
Below are the viewing/listening options, but know primarily that it's the main NBC game. -- DK

ONE LAST WALK-THROUGH
12:42 a.m. Sunday: The Steelers' final walk-through for the week is today, after which they might -- or might not -- fly to Cincinnati. Bear in mind, they sought and received a waiver from the NFL last week to fly to Buffalo on game-day. We'll see. At any rate, Dale Lolley and I will head in that direction tonight after taping WPXI-TV's 'The Final Word.' -- DK

CONNER QUESTIONABLE,
DOTSON OUT MONDAY
3:20 p.m. Saturday: James Conner was limited again in practice on Saturday because of a quad injury and is officially listed as questionable for the Steelers' game Monday night against the Bengals. If he can't play, Benny Snell would get the start.
Rookie guard Kevin Dotson is out for this game with a shoulder injury. There is hope that Dotson will be available moving forward as he is expected to help replace starting left guard Matt Feiler. Feiler was placed on injured reserve earlier this week with a chest injury.
Joe Haden, who missed last week's game against the Bills with a concussion, will return for the Steelers in this game. -- Lolley

JOHNSON NOT CONCERNED ABOUT
COACHING STAFF'S TOUGH LOVE
1:30 p.m. Saturday: Diontae Johnson got benched for most of the first half of the Steelers' 26-15 loss last Sunday at Buffalo after dropping two passes on the first two offensive possessions. In speaking just now, he didn't sound concerned about the moment of tough love, only about getting back onto the field to show what he can do.
"That’s what we do for a living, catch the ball," Johnson said. "We know what we’re supposed to do when we catch the ball. Look it in."
Johnson returned to the game in the second half and caught three passes, finishing with four receptions for 40 yards. Ben Roethlisberger approached Johnson before the two-minute warning with a message.
"He told me to keep my head up and do I want to help this team?" Johnson said. "I said, yeah, I wanted to help the team. I felt like I was being myself in the second half."
Johnson appreciated the words from the quarterback, saying it "showed that he cares about me. Some players probably wouldn’t do that. For him to come up to me and give some motivational speech. It got me going."
The Steelers need to get Johnson going. After a tough three weeks catching the ball, Johnson now leads the NFL with nine dropped passes according to Stats.com. But he leads the team in receiving yards and remains a big part of the offense. -- Lolley
ALLEN OUT, FINLEY IN
FOR BENGALS
12 p.m. Saturday: Brandon Allen is barely passable as an NFL quarterback. But at least he's semi-competent. Ryan Finley? Not so much. But Bengals coach Zac Taylor just declared Allen out for Monday night with a knee injury. That means Finley will make the start. Finley also started the Steelers' 16-10 win in Cincinnati last season. He completed 12 of 26 passes for 192 yards with one touchdown and was sacked four times. He also fumbled twice, losing one. It hasn't gotten any better this season. Finley has completed just 10 of 19 passes for 70 yards with no touchdowns and two interceptions this season. He's been sacked seven times. -- Lolley
ALUALU SAYS STEELERS
NEED TO RETURN TO FORM
10:40 a.m. Saturday: The Steelers are getting in an extra day of practice this week in preparation for their game Monday night against the Bengals. And it's much needed according to nose tackle Tyson Alualu.
After playing three games in 12 days and losing the final two of those, the Steelers (11-2) were a tired team that seemed to have lost its way a little bit. Monday night offers a chance to return to the form that added up to 11-straight wins to start the season.
"We definitely have to get back right," Alualu said. "It's always been about how we play. We just have to get back to playing Steelers football."
And what is that?
"Anytime you think about Steelers football, it’s always been about hard-nosed, physical football," Alualu said. -- Lolley
ONE MORE SET OF REPS
4:27 a.m. Saturday: A full practice on a Saturday is rare, but the game's not till Monday night, and Mike Tomlin did make clear his wish to get this team back into some serious rhythm, so they'll get going at 11:45 a.m. on the South Side. From the media standpoint, we'll hear from Tyson Alualu, Diontae Johnson and Marcus Allen. Dale Lolley will be on location. -- DK

CONNER LIMITED FRIDAY,
DOTSON REMAINS OUT
4 p.m. Friday: James Conner returned to practice on a limited basis today. He's dealing with a quad issue. The news was not so good for guard Kevin Dotson (shoulder), who was out again. And though the Steelers practice again tomorrow, it's looking less likely that he will be available. If he isn't, either Derwin Gray or J.C. Hassenauer would get the start. Ben Roethlisberger was back as a full participant, while Sean Davis (illness) also returned today. -- Lolley
BENGALS' ALLEN
STILL NOT PRACTICING
3:45 p.m. Friday: Brandon Allen isn't a very good quarterback. But he's the best the Bengals have right now. And he's still not practicing this week because of a knee injury. If he can't play Monday night against the Steelers, second-year pro Ryan Finley would start against the Steelers. That could get ugly. In two seasons, Finley has completed 48.1 percent of his 106 pass attempts for 509 yards, two touchdowns and four interceptions. He's been sacked 18 times and fumbled four times. -- Lolley
BENGALS WEIGH IN
ON JUJU'S DANCING
12:47 p.m. Friday: It looks like the Bills aren't the only team to have a problem with JuJu Smith-Schuster's dancing, judging by this from Bengals safety Von Bell:
CIN's Vonn Bell on JuJu dancing on logos: "It's kind of disrespectful at the end of the day. But they're on top right now so you can't really say nothing right now. We just gotta go out there, between the lines, go out there and hit him and let him know where he stands."

Smith-Schuster addressed the attention his TikTok dancing has received earlier this week, saying he does not plan to stop doing it. -- Hiles
VILLANUEVA FOCUSES
ON HIS OWN NEGATIVES
9:15 a.m. Friday: Earlier this week, Mike Tomlin said the Steelers weren't being physical enough, particularly against the Bills. And Ben Roethlisberger said the next day that it wasn't necessarily all on the offensive line to do that.
So Friday morning, I asked Alejandro Villanueva for his take on that subject. His response was probably not what you'd expect. Villanueva said he got rid of his smart phone earlier this year to go with a flip phone and because of that, he had no idea to what I was referring.
"Whenever any football narrative comes out, regardless of what it is, there probably is enough evidence for it to be viable. I’m sure there is a certain level of truth to it. I don’t dwell on the commentary," Villanueva said. "I have not been watching football for that long. I focus on the things that I can control. That is assignment blocking and the type of blocks that I have to do. If you ask me about those blocks, then maybe I will be able to give you more insight of what I believe. Maybe I have not been doing a good job this season. I can only speak for myself. I have no idea of what a guard’s block or what a center’s block looks like. The narratives that come and go during a football season, I’m not very familiar with what’s been said. I’m not even familiar with what Coach Tomlin tells you. I don’t have any access to the Internet. I’ve been in a media bubble for almost the past year of my life.
"I try to do things to the best of my abilities on every single block. I understand for sure that I have so much to improve on. I’m not a perfect player. I have to minimize mistakes. And the physicality is always a component of playing offensive lineman and playing football in general. If someone wants to say that, including the head coach, that we’re lacking physicality, then they’re in their right to do it. In my mind, I cannot challenge narratives. All I can do is control my blocks."
Villanueva said he has Internet access at home, he just doesn't have it readily available to him because he wanted to shut out the outside noise during an election year, which he found fascinating while living in a swing state such as Pennsylvania.
There's a lot here -- as there always is, with Al. You can check out the full media session in the video below. -- Lolley
ANOTHER DAY,
ANOTHER PRACTICE
2:17 a.m. Friday: The Steelers are right back at it today on the South Side, with a full practice beginning at 12:15 p.m. From the media perspective, we'll hear from Alejandro Villanueva at 9 a.m. -- that could be interesting -- and T.J. Watt at 2 p.m. Dale Lolley will be there to cover. -- DK
EBRON DROPS
A NEW PODCAST
10:45 p.m. Thursday: Eric Ebron's got an awful lot to say about the state of the Steelers for someone who's very much been part of the problem, not least of which is that they "have a very strong lack of focus right now." He spoke this and more on the podcast he produced tonight while, of course, fully focused on the game next Monday in Cincinnati. -- DK

DOTSON HELD OUT
OF PRACTICE
3:30 p.m. Thursday: Even though today is a Thursday, it's a Wednesday for the Steelers because they don't play until Monday night. So, Ben Roethlisberger was given an additional day of rest this week. Joe Haden also went through his second day of practice, making it look likely he would be available to play against Cincinnati.
But rookie guard Kevin Dotson (shoulder) did not practice. That's significant since he would be replacing Matt Feiler (chest), who went on IR earlier this week. Safety Sean Davis was out with an illness, while running back James Conner also took it easy with his quad injury. -- Lolley
FITZPATRICK: ATTENTION
TO DETAIL IS KEY
1:50 p.m. Thursday: While a majority of the blame for the Steelers back to back losses has been placed on the offense, Minkah Fitzpatrick just acknowledged that the defense also needs to step up in order for the team to get back in the win column. -- Hiles
FICHTNER EMPHASIZES
DROPPED PASSES
10:45 a.m. Thursday: While the Steelers have had more than their share of offensive issues, of late, dropped passes or not coming up with 50-50 balls has been an issue, to the point that second-year wide receiver Diontae Johnson was benched for most of the first half in a 26-15 loss to the Bills last Sunday after dropping two more.
Randy Fichtner mentioned those miscues numerous times during his media session just now.
"If you're going to throw the football, you've got to catch the football," he said. "If we're going to throw short, the short balls have to be caught. We've got to make our plays."
Fichtner felt Johnson responded to his benching well. He started the second half and didn't drop any more passes, finishing the game with four catches for 40 yards.
"Diontae wants to win and he wants to do things right," Fichtner said. "He was very professional about it. I knew at any time I could have walked over to him before a series and he would have been good. He is more than capable. He is an awesome guy with the football in his hands. Maybe it's concentration. Maybe it's young guys not practicing consistently. I know one thing, he had a hell of a practice yesterday."
I asked Fichtner about the deep passing numbers I dug up earlier this week and if they mean the Steelers have to adjust where they are throwing the ball deep. The Steelers are 14 of 26 throwing the ball downfield to the left side, but 5 of 43 to the right.
Fichtner said that is something the team looks at, but there are factors involved.
"Defenses dictate to where they rotate defense, rotate the safety," Fichtner said. "Part of it might be to who you throw that to. (Ben Roethlisberger) is more than capable of throwing the ball downfield. We have guys capable of doing it. I'm not afraid to throw it deep. A couple of weeks back, we started that way against Washington. It could be the first play, it could be the last play.
"Maybe who is running patterns on a certain side. Some guys never get a clean release. We'll go out and practice deep balls today. We won't have a defender in there because we don't want feet to get tangled and things of that nature. But it gives you a chance to work on timing. The idea of throwing the ball past the sticks is critical to us." -- Dale Lolley
BUTLER WANTS MORE
OUT OF HIS DEFENSE
10:30 a.m. Thursday: The Steelers remain a team that is adjusting to life without Bud Dupree after losing him three weeks ago in a win over the Ravens.
But that doesn't mean defensive coordinator Keith Butler has changed what he wants out of his defense. Butler was peeved the defense couldn't get off the field in the second half of last week's loss to the Bills, allowing Buffalo to essentially run out the clock. The Steelers had just four offensive possessions in the second half, running 19 plays.
"We've got to get them out on third downs and give our offense a chance to win the football game," he said. "That was the thing I'd like to see a little bit better. In that critical situation, I wish we would have done that."
And he feels that despite not having Dupree, Devin Bush and some other pieces missing recently, the team is still capable of doing that.
The Steelers should get cornerback Joe Haden (concussion) back Monday against the Bengals, while inside linebacker Vince Williams (COVID-19) also will return at some point soon.
"We've got a lot of good players on this defense. They play well, they play well together," Butler said. "The play good team defense. We've got to continue to do that. Get after the quarterback a little more. Stop the run." -- Lolley
IT'S COORDINATOR THURSDAY
2:54 a.m. Thursday: The Steelers' second practice of Bengals week begins at 12:15 p.m., which is indoors again, given the heavy snowfall the past 36 hours. At 10:20 a.m., Keith Butler and Randy Fichtner will speak with us. Dale Lolley will be right there to cover it.
I was on baseball duty again yesterday, but I've still got this football podcast below. -- DK
HADEN PRACTICES
4:25 p.m. Wednesday: The Steelers haven't issued their first participation report of the week yet -- they don't have to today since they play Monday night -- but Joe Haden is seen practicing in the photos the team distributed this afternoon, including the one atop this Live Wire. -- DK
JUJU WON'T STOP DANCING
ON OPPOSING LOGO
2 p.m. Wednesday: JuJu Smith-Schuster has gotten some heat after video of him surfaced dancing on the Bills logo in pre-game Sunday. The Bills took some offense at that and released a video after the game of quarterback Josh Allen talking about it in his pre-game speech.
But Smith-Schuster said he's not going to stop.
"I'm not going to stop being myself. I'm going to be the Ju-Ju I am," Smith-Schuster said. "This is something I've been doing since mid-season. It's not just their logo. I'm just having fun being myself. Yes, we lost. They had a few words to say. I'm not going to stop doing it."
Perhaps it's something Mike Tomlin will put an end to. Perhaps nobody really cares.
Winning teams can say whatever they like. And had the Steelers beaten the Bills, that video never would have been seen. -- Lolley
ROETHLISBERGER SAYS
KNEE FEELS GREAT
11:45 a.m. Wednesday: There was a report over the weekend that Ben Roethlisberger is dealing with a serious knee injury that the Steelers are very concerned about.
Roethlisberger scoffed at that on Wednesday.
"I'm 38 years old. I've played football for 17 years. I have had multiple surgeries. The week before I definitely was dealing with some knee pain from the previous week," Roethlisberger said. "Now, my knee feels pretty good. That report to me is just phony things that people just want to make up."
Roethlisberger was not listed on the injury report last week with a knee issue after having been so the previous week.
He also said his arm is feeling as good as it has in several years this late in the season, but he'll continue to take Wednesday practices off for maintenance not only for that, but for his whole body.
"Arm feels really good. Still need to be prudent because we still don't know," said Roethlisberger, who had elbow surgery last year. "My arm feels really good but it's about the rest of my body. It's just smart with this weird season, how many games we have played in a row."
• The Steelers' quarterback doesn't think the Steelers, who have struggled offensively the past three games, need a major overhaul on offense.
I don't think we need to adjust drastically," he said. "There are plays to be had if we make them. Some of it stems of physicality. We're not being as physical as we need to be. Physicality isn't just about the line. It's about picking up blitzes. It's about picking up a yard. It's about blocking on the edge. Hopefully we can turn this thing around and hit the plays that are there to be had."
He again reiterated that while many people look at the offensive line when both he and Mike Tomlin have talked about the team being more physical, that's not necessarily the case.
"When you talk about physicality that's where everyone automatically looks. It naturally falls in that area," Roethlisberger said. "I don't think all the fingers should be pointed there. The line takes it personally. Being physically tough mentally in your mind. I don't want to lose track that it's not just about the line. Sometimes a running back has to put his head down and beat the guy in the hole. Sometimes, it's about not stepping out of bounds."
The Steelers were scoring points well earlier in the season. After nine games, they were fourth in the league, averaging 30 points per game. Their recent lull and two-game losing streak, has seen them fall to 11th in points scored.
But Roethlisberger isn't concerned.
"If we were starting the postseason tomorrow, maybe there would be a little more panic," he said. "But we've got three more games. What a great way to get some pre-postseason work in by playing these three games. We have some time to get ourselves out of this lull. It's not too late for us." -- Lolley
IT'S BEN'S DAY
2:54 a.m. Wednesday: The Steelers' first practice of Bengals week begins at 12:15 p.m. A half-hour before that, Ben Roethlisberger, who never practices on Wednesdays, will have his weekly session with the media. Dale Lolley will be right there to cover it.
I was on baseball duty yesterday, but I've still got this football podcast below. -- DK
STEELERS SIGN LINEMAN
OFF CHIEFS' PRACTICE SQUAD
3:37 p.m. Tuesday: The Steelers just signed offensive lineman Danny Isidora off the practice squad of the Chiefs to help replace Matt Feiler. Feiler was placed on injured reserve yesterday with a pectoral injury. He is not expected to return this season.
Isidora was a fifth-round draft pick of the Vikings in 2017 out of Miami. He was traded to the Dolphins for a seventh-round draft pick earlier this year, but then released. The Chiefs then signed Isidora to their practice squad. He has been active for one game this season for the Chiefs and played in 25 games in his career, making six starts. -- Lolley
TOMLIN: DOTSON COULD PLAY
12:08 p.m. Tuesday: While the Steelers placed left guard Matt Feiler on injured reserve Monday with a pectoral injury, the news was a little better on rookie guard Kevin Dotson. Following Sunday's loss to the Bills, Tomlin said both had pectoral injuries, though both were initially described as shoulder injuries in game. Feiler does, indeed, have a pectoral injury. But Dotson was a shoulder.
And Tomlin feels Dotson could be able to play Monday night in Cincinnati, though he could be limited in practice early in the week. "It is," Tomlin said when I asked if his statement means that Dotson could play. "But his participation could be compromised in the early portion of the week." Having Dotson available would alleviate some issues on the offensive line, which was down to five healthy players in game at times against the Bills.
Tomlin also said James Conner (quad), Chuks Okorafor (ankle) Terrell Edmunds (shoulder) and Joe Haden (concussion) all could be limited early in the week, but are likely to play against the Bengals.
• Tomlin felt his team lost the physical battle against the Bills, something that was troubling to him.
"They were the more physical football team," Tomlin said of the loss to the Bills. "We don't want to make that comment," but it was in this case.
Tomlin said the Steelers need to get back to being the more physical team moving forward. -- Lolley
RAVENS WIN, MOVE STEELERS
CLOSER TO AFC NORTH TITLE
11:45 p.m. Monday: So the Ravens and Browns hooked up in a game in Cleveland in which there was no defense played, with the Ravens winning, 47-42, on a 55-yard Justin Tucker field goal. They then added a safety on the game's final play as the Browns tried a bunch of laterals to finish things off.
Why do we bring this up?
That dropped the Browns to 9-4, meaning a win next week by the Steelers in Cincinnati would clinch the AFC North title, no matter what else happens the rest of the season based on tiebreakers, the first of which would be a better division record.
Of course, it also means the Ravens, who have an easy schedule the rest of the way, also will probably be in the postseason, as well. -- Lolley
ALL THAT JAZZ
7:24 p.m. Monday: The Bills' Josh Allen clearly thinks as much of all the Steelers' dancing as a lot of their fans do:

FEILER TO IR, MARSH ACTIVE
4:50: p.m. Monday: The Steelers placed Matt Feiler on injured reserve after his pectoral injury last night in Orchard Park. Taking his place on the roster is the recently signed defensive end Cassius Marsh, now activated from the practice squad. Marsh has nine starts dating back to 2014 between six different teams, including 14 sacks and 25 tackles for loss across 91 games he's played. -- Carter
HADEN EXPECTS TO PLAY
2:30 p.m. Monday: The Steelers missed Joe Haden last night, but it looks like they won't have to for much longer. Haden posted on his Instagram, "Cincy WEEK ... let's get it!!!! SEE YOU MONDAY NIGHT." Haden's return would put the Steelers' secondary back at full strength for the first time since the team played the Ravens. He leads the team with 11 passes defensed and his two interceptions are second-most, only behind Minkah Fitzpatrick. During his absence, the 26 points scored by the Bills was the most against the Steelers since the team's 38-29 win over the Eagles on Oct. 11, and seven of those points came from the Buffalo defense. -- Carter
