Jim Rutherford hinted in his 3 p.m. media availability Friday that he expected to sign more players for Wilkes-Barre/Scranton in free agency the same day, and the ink must have hit the paper for the first signing right after the call ended.
The Penguins quickly announced the signing of forward Josh Currie to a one-year, two-way deal worth $700,000 at the NHL level.
Currie, who turns 28 later this month, is a 5-foot-11, 190-pound right winger.
Originally undrafted, Currie began his career in the ECHL and worked his way up through the Oilers organization, an organization where he has spent the last six years, primarily in the AHL. He skated in 56 games this season as an alternate captain with AHL Bakersfield, scoring 24 goals and 17 assists. He made his NHL debut in the 2018-19 season, scoring two goals and three assists in 21 games with Edmonton.
Currie was a favorite among Condors fans during his time in Bakersfield.
“First and foremost, he’s a good citizen," Condors coach Gerry Flemming once said. "Every time he’s on the ice, he’s going to give you everything he’s got. That comes back to being a good teammate. Ask anybody and everybody who played with him.”
