RICHMOND, Va. -- I was a fan of most sports when I was a kid, but nothing was bigger than football, and I watched the United States Football League's debut with great interest, excited to be able to be able to watch my favorite game all year round.
Season 2 figured to be even more incredible, with the Pittsburgh Maulers taking the field. The Steelers had been in decline for several seasons, so who knew, maybe the Maulers would usurp them as my new favorite football team of all?
Alas, such would not be the case, as the Maulers were pretty abysmal right out of the gate, every bit a sub-mediocre team in an often sub-mediocre league.
For those who haven’t seen it, I highly recommend the episode of ESPN’s 30 for 30 called 'Small Potatoes: Who Killed The USFL?' It really makes you feel like the USFL had a chance at success, and might still be around today (at least in some form) had the hubris and egos of some of the owners not gotten in the way. It’s a must-watch for anyone even slightly interested in the league.
