Saquon Barkley rushes past the Maryland defense en route to a career day. -- GETTY

UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. -- Saquon Barkley ran up the gut, bounced it outside the Penn State line and even displayed his signature hurdle, this time going airborne over Maryland's William Likely.

For all that ailed the Nittany Lions' run game during the first five games, when Barkley eclipsed the century mark just once, this soggy Saturday afternoon at Beaver Stadium saw Barkley back in a big way. The Nittany Lions powered their way past DJ Durkin's Terrapins, delivering Maryland (4-1, 1-1 Big Ten) their first loss of the season while the Lions gave their Homecoming crowd a 38-14 win.

The Nittany Lions (4-2, 2-1) rushed for a season- high 372 yards, with Barkley accounting for a career-high 202 yards on 31 carries, the first 200-yard game of his career. The milestone marked his most rushing yards since he posted 194 against Ohio State last year. He posted a previous career best of 195 last season against Rutgers.

"The o-line did an unbelievable job of getting movement, getting hat on hats," Barkley said. "After the end of the game I looked up at the board and saw that we had 300-some rushing yards I looked them all in the eye and said, 'That's all you guys.' "
