SAN FRANCISCO — Sometimes you hang the curveball. Sometimes you run into an out. Sometimes you fall behind their best hitter. Sometimes you mistakenly start to issue an intentional walk.

Sometimes it works out anyway.

That was the contradictory scene Tuesday night at AT&T Park, where the Pirates did a lot of things wrong, but came out on the right end of a 4-3 final that extended their win streak to three, clinched a series victory and guaranteed a winning California trip.

In the end, it was rather simple. Tony Watson worked his way into a mess, then worked his way out of it.
