BRADENTON, Fla. — On the first day of a weeklong voluntary minicamp at Pirate City, the Pirates filled out their list of non-roster spring training invitees, a group of 23 that included a few prospects and several other players from within the organization.

Outfielder Austin Meadows, ranked last year by MLB.com as the ninth-best prospect in baseball, headlined the group revealed Monday morning, followed by infielder Kevin Newman, No. 42 on that same list.

"It was the goal going back to the beginning of (last) year," Newman told me after the first day of workouts were complete. "I wanted to play well enough to get invited to big-league spring training, and thankfully the Pirates think I did. I'm fortunate to have that opportunity."
