CINCINNATI — For the Riverhounds' Mauricio Vargas, Saturday's match with FC Cincinnati was a long time coming.
Vargas, a New-Jersey born goalkeeper who moved to Costa Rica shortly after his birth, was inserted into the Riverhounds' starting lineup for the first time in his young professional career. To top it off, he did it in front of a USL-record crowd that was announced as 23,375 fans at Nippert Stadium.
"Since I was 9, I started going to academies in Costa Rica. This is what you dream of, you know?" Vargas said in his thick Costa Rican accent following the Hounds' 1-0 loss to FCC. "Finally, that dream came true."
